12V LED Strip Lights - What Are They?

Very few people realize how important it is to save on energy and switch to more efficient power saving electrical devices and appliances. In the next decade, the global power consumption will double if not triple. This can affect the environment we live due to the number of nuclear plants that will be required to keep the world running. LED lights are one of the most cost-effective ways to save on energy and prevent this imminent environmental decay. Even the common 12V LED strip lights can help both the environment and save some money on the power bill.

What Are They?

LED strips are flexible PCBs that contain multiple light-emitting diodes places in a straight line. A single LED will not generate enough lumens to make it useful in any way but when multiple diodes are combined, LED strip lights start offering a pleasant ambient light. The entire process is easy to understand. When the LED is connected to a power source, electrons start to move around and recombine with the electron holes in the diode which leads to a release of energy form called photons. The material used for the dielectric part of the diode will determine the color of the light.

A strip lights LED can consume up to 10 times less power than its iridescent light bulb equivalent. Also, due to the low voltage of the strips, the risk of electrocution is significantly reduced. 12V LED strip lights generate a lot of lumens but they do not have the power to threaten the life of an individual. Last but not least, LEDs can last decades without failing. An average quality low-voltage diode can run for at least 50.000 hours without interruption. They do cost a bit more than the average light bulb but they last 10 times as long in some cases. LEDs pay for themselves from the simple fact that they do not fail as often. On top of that they can significantly reduce the power bill.

Who Uses LED Light Strips?

Computer modders like to use such strips inside their computer cases. They prefer colored LEDs such as red, blue or green. Rarely they use standard white colored LEDs. To make it visible, the always get cases with side windows.

In regular households, LED strip light to create a comfortable ambient on corners, shelves, masked zones, and small ornamental statues and so on. They can also be used for exterior design during holidays around the home, the porch or at window edges. These 12V LED light strips are also used for Christmas threes.

Some might go as far and place them in their cars in places such as under the dashboard or under the car. They can successfully replace any iridescent lighting especially due to the low power consumption. Let us not forget that power consumption is important for every car. These LED lights consume less power, preventing battery drains.

There are plenty of other applications for LED strips. They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors and voltages. It is up to the consumer's imagination how he will use them.
